‘Space 50’ from Niki McCretton at The Barn, Dartington Hall, Totnes, on Friday 21 March will be a treat! Big Issue magazine promotion much to be praised (but there is a sad whoopsy).

The Big Issue feature PERFECT TEN (things to do in the South West) promotes the superb Niki McCretton ‘Space 50’ show in Totnes at The Barn, Dartington Hall, on Friday 21 March 2008.

I saw the try-out at the Lighthouse in Poole. I really must see the fully-developed show one day. Niki merges Art and Science as seamlessly as they deserve. There is no division between the two in the mind of a complete person. I attack the ‘arty’ and the ‘fake scientific’ equally.

Lamentably, the person who wrote the blurb in BIG ISSUE could not resist trotting an uninformed, knee-jerk attack on the Space Program as being “slow and expensive”. It took ONLY 8 YEARS from 1961 to 1969 to giant-leap WW2 technology to a new leading-edge, the thousands of patents from which we are still applying in this Personal Technology and Internet age.

Each cent of the money spent by NASA went into somebody’s PAY PACKET and 400,000 new jobs were lost again as Congress cancelled the lunar-development project in 1972. The total amount of tax money spent (averaged-out annually over the years of the Apollo Moon Program) was equal to the sum American consumers spent on smoking, or one tenth of what they spent on boozing, during the same period.

I call that very good value for money!
